Fine copy of the first edition of Turpin de Crissé’s large and illustrated commentaries to Montecuccoli’s ”Mémoires, ou Principes de l’art militaire”. The allegoric frontispice is engraved by Andouard after Casanova. A second edition in 8vo was published in 1770. The Imperial general Raimund Montecuccoli (1609-80) is considered one of the most important 17th century military theoretical authors, as well as a highly succesful general in a numbers of wars and also as a diplomat. His works were published in several editions and translations. The first French edition of ”Mémoires, ou Principes de l’art militaire” was published in 1712. The Italian original ”Memoria delle guerra”was published in 1704. Lancelot Turpin de Crissé (1716-93) also had a military career and served in the French army. Beside this work he also published commentaries to Caesar and Vegeta, and wrote an ”Essai sur l’art de la guerre” (1754). Carl L. Kämpe (1738-1816) var amanuens vid Kungl. Biblioteket och senare kansliråd samt en flitig boksamlare. Han gjorde ett flertal utländska resor i Europa som informator för unga adelsmän och införskaffade under dessa en stor mängd böcker, inte minst i Paris under åren efter franska revolutionen. Han donerade 1815 en stor mängd böcker till Skara Kongl. gymnasii bibliothek och en mindre samling samtidigt till herrgårdsbiblioteket på Kavlås.
